چکیده
We present the results of a search for gravitationally-lensed giant arcs conducted on a sample of 825 SDSS galaxy clusters. Both a visual inspection of the images and an automated search were performed and no arcs were found. This result is used to set an upper limit on the arc probability per cluster. We present selection functions for our survey, in the form of arc detection efficiency curves plotted as functions of arc parameters, both for the visual inspection and the automated search. The selection function is such that we are sensitive only to long, high surface brightness arcs with g-band surface brightness µ g ≤ 24.8 and length-to-width ratio l/w ≥ 10. Our upper limits on the arc probability are compatible with previous arc searches. Lastly, we report on a serendipitous discovery of a giant arc in the SDSS data, known inside the SDSS Collaboration as Hall's arc.

Galaxy clusters can be detected as surface brightness enhancements in smoothed optical surveys. This method does not require individual galaxies to be identifiable, and enables clusters to be detected out to surprisingly high redshifts, as recently demonstrated by the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey (LCDCS). Here, we investigate redshift limits for cluster detection in the Sloan Digital Sky...

We present H -band observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC4696, the brightest member of the Centaurus cluster of galaxies. We have measured its light profile, using a two-dimensional fitting algorithm, out to a radius of 180 arcsec (37 h 70 kpc). The profile is well described by a de Vaucouleurs law, with an effective radius of 35.3 ± 1.0 h 70 kpc. There is no need for the extra free paramete...

Using a sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data (SDSS) Data Release 4, we study the trends relating surface brightness profile type and apparent axis ratio to the local galaxy environment. We use the SDSS parameter ‘fracDeV’ to quantify the profile type (fracDeV = 1 for a pure de Vaucouleurs profile; fracDeV = 0 for a pure exponential profile). We find that galaxies with Mr & ...

One of the most vital observational clues for unraveling the origin of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCG) is the observed alignment of the BCGs with their host cluster and its surroundings. We have examined the BCG-cluster alignment effect, using clusters of galaxies detected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that the BCGs are preferentially aligned with the principal axis of thei...

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) will carry out a digital photometric and spectroscopic survey over π steradi-ans in the northern Galactic cap. An array of CCD detectors used in drift-scan mode will image the sky in five passbands to a limiting magnitude of r ′ ∼ 23. Selected from the imaging survey , 10 6 galaxies, 10 5 quasars and selected samples of stars will be observed spectroscopicall...
